A Prototype Only Its Creator Can Run Is Still a Private Miracle

Scientists love the sentence: “It works.” The more important sentence is: “Someone else made it work.” A prototype can perform beautifully on its creator’s computer and still be unusable everywhere else. Perhaps it depends on an undocumented library, a particular driver, a forgotten environment variable and one sacred folder that must never be renamed. At that point, the invention is not entirely a tool. Part of it is folklore. I encountered this while building the Virtual BioSSD. Making the system run was one achievement. Making it possible for another researcher to install, test and reproduce without reenacting every setup struggle became a different engineering problem. The second problem is less glamorous. It may also determine whether the first achievement matters. The US National Academies distinguishes reproducibility from replicability. Reproducibility asks whether another researcher can obtain consistent results using the same data, code and methods. Replicability asks whet...

10 Recent inventions changing the face of Humanity

Within the last three years,Humans have been bombarded with inventions from the scientific world, technological feats considered impossible in the last few hundred years. Now what inventions are literally changing  humans as soon as the hit the world shelf ? Introducing mehkury Top 10... 1. NASA Mars Insight A Craft That Will Probe Beyond the Surface of Mars Built by NASA,Its expected to launch in May of 2018.Its purpose is to hammer a probe more than 16 ft. into the Martian surface to study the planet’s thermal history—in effect, taking its geological temperature. Meanwhile, the seismometers will study Mars’ composition, an X-ray radio link will analyze wobble (the way Mars spins on its axis and is gravitationally tugged by other bodies in the solar system), and cameras will send panoramic and 3-D pictures back to earth. Its usefulness need not to be overstated as it's obvious that if the perception and the knowledge of humans about Ma...
