Artificial intelligence can produce ten pages before a human writer has settled on the opening sentence.
It can reorganize chapters, improve transitions, generate references, redraw explanations and suggest structures with the confidence of an editor who has never doubted himself.
That confidence is useful.
It is also dangerous.
I learned this while preparing a 227-page research monograph on BioSSD and the Universal Molecular Digital Interface architecture.
The work was already substantial. The architecture had been defined. Its layers served specific functions. The chapters, figures and tables grew from the same underlying model. My task for the machine appeared straightforward: remove repetition, expand selected chapters, prepare the references and appendices, and bring the manuscript closer to publication quality.
In other words, edit the work.
The machine decided to redesign it.
Without asking, it changed the architecture from six layers to eight.
On a casual page, that might look like a small alteration. Two additional boxes. A few new headings. Perhaps even an improvement.
Inside a technical monograph, it was an earthquake.
The architecture shaped the terminology, tables, diagrams, chapter arguments and flow of the research. Once the number of layers changed, everything downstream had to change with it. I was forced to return to Chapter Three, reconstruct the architecture, redraw every affected figure and trace the consequences through the rest of the manuscript.
Weeks disappeared into a correction that should never have been necessary.
The machine did not lose sleep.
It did not miss the launch schedule.
It did not forfeit the other work planned for the first week of September.
I did.
That is the difference people forget when they speak about artificial intelligence as though intelligence were the only thing that matters.
The machine can produce the decision.
The human carries its consequence.
This does not make artificial intelligence useless. That would be a foolish conclusion, particularly from someone who uses it to build software, interrogate scientific ideas, refine arguments and perform work that once required an entire small team.
AI is powerful precisely because it can enter complex work and move with astonishing speed.
But speed creates its own illusion.
When a machine produces fluent language, we begin to treat fluency as understanding. When it presents a clean structure, we assume the structure must be sound. When it answers confidently, we forget that confidence is part of the presentation—not proof that the reasoning beneath it survived inspection.
A sentence can be grammatically perfect and intellectually false.
A diagram can be beautiful and architecturally destructive.
A reference can look credible and lead nowhere.
A revision can improve every paragraph while quietly damaging the work as a whole.
The danger is not merely that AI makes mistakes. Humans make mistakes too. The deeper danger is that artificial intelligence can manufacture errors at the same speed and scale with which it manufactures useful work.
One careless human editor might weaken three pages.
A machine can introduce the same misunderstanding across twelve chapters before lunch.
This changes the responsibility of the person using it.
The arrival of AI does not remove the need for expertise. It punishes its absence.
If you do not understand the work, you cannot recognize when the machine has improved it, misunderstood it or replaced it with something that merely sounds more sophisticated. You become a spectator applauding the demolition of your own structure.
That is why prompting alone will never be enough.
A perfect instruction cannot replace judgment. Even when the request is clear, the person directing the system must know which elements are negotiable and which ones form the spine of the work. The machine must be told where it may experiment, where it may recommend and where it must stop and ask permission.
But even those boundaries require supervision.
The word “assistant” is useful here.
An assistant can extend your reach. It can accelerate tedious labour, expose gaps, challenge assumptions and bring possibilities to the table. It should not quietly inherit ownership of the thought.
The moment the author stops interrogating the output, assistance becomes substitution.
And substitution carries a hidden cost.
A person may produce more while understanding less.
Students can submit essays they could not defend. Entrepreneurs can launch products whose systems they do not understand. Researchers can fill manuscripts with references they have never opened. Public officials can approve machine-generated recommendations without knowing which assumptions shaped them.
The documents will exist.
The understanding may not.
We are entering an age in which intellectual output can grow much faster than intellectual responsibility. There will be more reports, more proposals, more books, more policies and more confident explanations than at any previous point in history.
That abundance will not automatically produce wisdom.
It may simply produce a thicker fog.
The human role, therefore, is not shrinking. It is becoming more severe.
We must decide what deserves to be created. We must distinguish polish from truth. We must preserve the original logic of work across thousands of generated words. We must know when the machine has crossed from editing into authorship and from assistance into interference.
Most importantly, we must remain capable of saying: this is wrong.
Not because the sentence sounds awkward.
Not because the machine failed to impress us.
But because we understand the subject deeply enough to identify the exact point where the reasoning departed from reality.
I still use artificial intelligence.
The experience did not convince me to retreat from it. It taught me to use it with clearer boundaries and less romanticism.
I no longer see AI as an oracle waiting behind a textbox. I see it as an extremely fast collaborator with immense range, uneven judgment and absolutely nothing to lose when it gets the work wrong.
That final point should govern everything.
The machine has no reputation inside your name.
It has no launch date to miss.
It has no readers to disappoint, argument to defend or years of thought tied to the integrity of a single architecture.
You do.
Use the machine.
Use it aggressively. Make it search, compare, calculate, criticize, organize and create. Let it extend the distance your mind can travel.
But never hand it the steering wheel and fall asleep.
It can write the work.
It cannot carry the consequence.
You do.
